Our Family Farming Story

Our journey into farming is not just a career choice; it's a commitment to a healthier, more sustainable way of life that honors our values and experiences. After spending years in the Air Force, Brian returned from a deployment in South Korea with a vision. He transformed the backyard of our suburban home into a vibrant garden, planting beans, corn, cucumbers, squash, okra, and tomatoes—not just for our table but for the whole neighborhood. This act of rebellion against conventional suburbia also included a small flock of chickens, a move that, while against the rules, won over our neighbors with the charm of fresh eggs.

The adventure didn't stop there. We moved to North Dakota, where we deepened our knowledge of raising chickens and pigs, even in the challenging cold. Our next chapter unfolded in Eastern North Carolina, where we've settled on a 45-acre farm that continues to grow. Here, we've embraced a blend of modern science and traditional farming practices, raising animals in small batches outdoors and producing food on a sustainable scale.

We've engaged with organizations like the Farmer Veteran Coalition and the Veteran's Farm of NC to integrate into the agricultural community while leveraging Brian's military experience. Sara's role in our farming endeavor is absolutely central. With over 20 years of management experience, she not only ensures that our farm runs smoothly, but also that it thrives, even in the face of challenges.

As we look to the future, we are focused on expanding our operations and sharing our story. With a firm foundation and a growing base of loyal customers, we are hopeful that we can become an influential voice in our local food community, advocating for a return to knowing your farmer and understanding where your food comes from.

Please join us on our journey to choosing a path of mindful consumption, and to rediscovering the joy of eating food that is grown with care and respect for the earth. Our story is not just about farming; it's about building a future where everyone can partake in the bounty of responsibly cultivated land!

About Our Practices

On our farm, we have blended modern agricultural techniques with traditional farming practices to create a sustainable and ethical food production ecosystem. We raise our animals, including forested hogs and pastured broilers, in small batches, allowing them to live outdoors in their natural habitats. This approach not only respects animal welfare but also enhances the quality of their life and, consequently, the quality of the products we offer. Our hogs roam freely in the forest, foraging as they would naturally, which contributes to the rich flavor and nutritional value of the pork we produce.

In addition to our animal husbandry practices, we emphasize small-scale food production that minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency. We process our poultry right on the farm under the PL90-492 exemption, ensuring that every aspect of production is handled with care and meets our high standards for food safety and quality. This hands-on approach allows us to maintain control over the entire process, from feeding and raising the animals to processing and selling the products. Our commitment to producing as much as possible on-farm not only reduces our environmental footprint but also fortifies the connection between our family and the food we share with our community. Through these practices, we aim to set a precedent for responsible and sustainable farming, proving that it is possible to merge old and new to create a harmonious, productive farm environment.
